How Does LASIK Surgery Work?

  • Creating the Corneal Flap: LASIK surgery begins with the creation of a thin flap in the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. The flap is then gently folded back to expose the underlying corneal tissue.
  • Reshaping the Cornea: Once the corneal flap is lifted Dr. Horn uses the WaveLight EX500 (the most advanced LASIK laser in the U.S.) to reshape the cornea. This laser precisely removes microscopic amounts of tissue to correct vision problems like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism by altering the way light rays enter the eye.
  • Flap Repositioning and Healing: After the cornea is reshaped, the flap is carefully laid back in place where it naturally adheres without the need for stitches. The corneal flap serves as a natural bandage, promoting rapid healing. The reshaped cornea now allows light to be properly focused onto the retina, which can lead to improved vision.
  • Quick and Minimal Discomfort: The LASIK procedure is typically quick, often completed within 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes. It is generally associated with minimal pain. Recovery is relatively fast, with most patients experiencing a significant improvement in vision almost immediately and returning to normal activities within a day or two.
