If you’re dealing with dry eye, you’re certainly not alone and Vision for Life can help! Around 30 million Americans currently suffer from dry eye, making it one of the world’s most common eye diseases. Symptoms include blurred/fluctuated vision, burning, redness, dryness, sandiness/grittiness, dryness, or watery eyes. These symptoms coupled with environmental challenges (air conditioners, heater, fans) or challenges such as fatigued eyes during digital device use can significantly impact your quality of life.

Fortunately, Vision for Life is on the forefront of the latest dry eye technology, iLux. This newest dry eye treatment is a safe, fast, effective, and non-surgical method to treat dry eye.

The iLux treatment is a simple process that doesn’t involve pain or significant aftercare on your part—it’s a non-surgical remedy that can be quickly administered during an office visit. The entire process takes about eight minutes, and most patients report feeling no pain. On average, the treatment is repeated one or two times per year to ensure your symptoms are well-managed.

Dry eye is a common problem, especially as computers and cell phones become an ever-increasing part of our lives. Your eyes do not have enough tears to keep them lubricated. The result is eye strain, irritation, discomfort, and itching.

Two issues can lead to dry eye syndrome:

  • Tear deficiency. Glands around your eyes are responsible for producing tears. Medical conditions, medications, lifestyle, weather and other factors can reduce the number of tears that is produced by the glands.
  • Evaporative dry eye. This is the most common type of dry eye. Healthy tears are made of a balance of mucous, water and oil. When you have too little oil in the tears, the liquid evaporates before it can lubricate the eyes. The water and mucous simply dry up before your eye is properly moistened.

Dry eye treatment by Dr. Horn addresses the root cause of the insufficient lubrication of your eyes. You may need to make some lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or protecting your eyes when outdoors. Dr. Horn may prescribe eye drops or other treatments. The overall goal is to provide you with a long-term solution that optimizes your ability to perform day-to-day tasks and enjoy a high quality of life.

Dry eye can be caused by a range of factors, some temporary and some permanent. Common medical causes of dry eye are:

  • Blepharitis
  • Meibomian Gland Dystrophy

If dry eye interferes with your day-to-day activities, you should consider dry eye treatment. You can learn more about correcting dry eye and schedule a dry eye evaluation. If you have advanced dry eye, Dr. Horn may recommend:

  • Punctal Plugs
  • Nutritional Supplements for Dry Eye
  • iLux Treatment

Beyond alleviating the symptoms of dry eye, iLux addresses the core issue: Meiboman Gland Dysfunction (MGD). When your meiboman glands are blocked, it can erode the lipid layer in the tear film in your eye that serves as a natural protective barrier. If left untreated, your meibomian glands can die altogether, making your dry eye irreversible. This will cause further and progressive damage to the ocular surface, more progressive and frequent visual disturbances, and permeant loss of Meibomian glands. By using heat and compression therapy, this treatment restores functionality to your meiboman glands by melting the thickened lipids. Think about it as a warm massage for your eyes!
