Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are an essential part of the medical research process and Dr. Horn is at the forefront of ophthalmology research. For example, Dr. Horn was one of 12 surgeons who participated in the FDA clinical trials of the PanOptix tri-focal lens. Dr. Horn was the only Tennessee surgeon selected for the investigation and the first surgeon in Tennessee to implant the lens.

These type of research studies allow surgeons to test new treatments, procedures, and technologies to determine their effectiveness and improve outcomes for patients. By participating in a clinical trial, patients have the opportunity to access cutting-edge treatments that are not yet widely available, and they can also contribute to the advancement of ophthalmology. In addition, there is typically no additional cost and the patient is usually compensated for their time!

Here are some common questions about clinical trials.

Clinical trials are controlled studies that aim to expand current knowledge and understanding of medical conditions and treatments. Clinical trials are performed under very strict standards that are based in science. This preserves the integrity of the research and demonstrates to medical professionals the soundness of the results. Clinical trials may focus on new medical treatments, devices and strategies for preventing and treating conditions.

Generally, participating in a research study allows the patient to receive some of the latest and most advanced treatment options and surgical techniques. There is typically no additional cost and the patient is usually compensated for their time. Another added benefit is knowing that your participation will assist in the development of future treatments, better medications, and improved techniques.

Dr. Horn will see you for an evaluation to determine if participation in a study would be appropriate for you. If participation is recommended, the advantages and disadvantages of the study, along with all the other details, will be explained to you prior to your joining a clinical trial. You will also receive a written copy of the consent form with these details. The choice of participation is always yours. If you are interested in participating in a study, just ask our staff when you contact us. Dr. Horn and the clinical trial coordinator will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Your participation in our clinical trials is at no cost to you.
